Book Discussion Group

Banned Book Club for Teens - April

Since 2022, book bans at public libraries have gone up by 92%. Read the books they don't want you to read at this teen-led book discussion group. We meet monthly at Jackson Heights in the basement program space, no registration required. Copies of each month's book are available to check out at the reference desk. Ages 14-18. The book for April is "Gender Queer" A graphic memoir of growing up, self-discovery, and identity, Gender Queer has been the most banned book in the US since 2021. Author Maia Kobabe (who uses e/em/eir pronouns) describes eir journey to understanding both eir nonbinary gender identity and asexuality. E does not shy away from sharing personal experiences like eir first period, relationship difficulties, and complicated feelings about gender. Targeted both for frank depictions of sexuality and unapologetic queerness, Gender Queer is an important read to understand current pushes for censorship.
