Come and learn about the culture and history of Tuvalu, an island in the Polynesian sub-region of Oceania in the Pacific Ocean, in this Fatele dance workshop. Tuvaluan traditional dances share similarities with those of neighboring nations - Fiji, Samoa, and Tonga. The Fatele, a traditional dance of Tuvalu, has been practiced for centuries and is deeply rooted in the island’s history and culture. Its origins date back to the early Polynesians' arrival on Tuvalu’s islands.
Artist and workshop facilitator Tinai Kepa uses warm-ups and Fatele exercises, along with a short choreography, to introduce the history of Tuvalu and the importance of the Fatele Dance in Tuvaluan culture. Ms. Kepa currently serves as First Secretary at the Permanent Mission of Tuvalu to the United Nations.
