DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Reporting to the Vice President of Finance, the Senior Accountant's responsibilities include preparing financial reports, performing account reconciliations, maintaining the general ledger, assisting with audit preparations, and performing other accounting duties as assigned. Strict attention to detail, ability to summarize and explain the meaning of financial results, strong accounting, and analytical skills with a high degree of accuracy on a continuous and consistent basis.
- Ensures accuracy and compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) for balance sheets, income statements, cash flow statements, and functional expense statements.
- Responsible for the month-end and year-end closing process to ensure timely and accurate reporting.
- Prepares necessary journal entries and adjustments.
- Analyzes actual financial results versus prior period/budgeted figures and provides explanations for any discrepancies.
- Ensures that financial records comply with local, state, and federal regulations, including tax laws and accounting standards.
- Ensures the Library's accounting processes have appropriate controls to prevent fraud and errors.
- Oversees and mentors junior accountants and other financial personnel, provides guidance and training on accounting practices and procedures.
- Works closely with other departments to ensure financial information is accurate and aligned with the library’s goals.
- Creates reports as requested by senior management, board members, or external vendors/consultants to support specific business decisions.
- Continuously looks for ways to streamline accounting processes, reduce errors, and improve efficiency.
- Stays current on financial regulations, accounting standards and industry best practices.
- Performs other accounting duties and supporting junior staff as required or assigned.
- Assists CFO and VP of Finance coordinating with external auditors for year-end audits and internal controls assessments.
- Assists with the preparation and filing of 990 tax returns, and any other statutory requirements.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance required.
- A minimum of five years of related accounting (and or financial reporting) experience in a large, complex environment required.
- Strong knowledge and understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
- Excellent organization and time management skills.
- Must have Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) data entry and/or financial reporting experience.
- Willing to take initiative, think critically and strategically, and collaborate with others to drive organizational change.
- Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to train and manage staff.
- Ability to work with little to no supervision.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly with Excel.
